The Government of the Republic of South Africa assumed the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) Presidency on 1 January 2018 and will be hosting the 10th BRICS Summit later this month.  As part of the BRICS Sectoral meetings in the lead up to this historic event, on 3 July, South Africa hosted the BRICS Science, Technology and Innovation Ministerial Meeting in Durban under the theme “Building BRICS Youth Leadership through Science, Technology and Innovation”.

Under this premise, SAAMBR had the honour of hosting His Excellency, Dr Harsh Vardhan, the Union Minister of Science & Technology & Earth Science and his delegation from India. Representatives from the South African Department of Science and Technology’s Bilateral Relations division accompanied the Minister on his visit. Prof. Sean Fennessy , the Assistant Director of the Oceanographic Research Institute (ORI), presented information on the three SAAMBR divisions, as well as on ORI marine research projects to the delegation. The delegation were escorted through the uShaka Sea World aquarium by  curator, Simon Chater, and Prof. Sean Fennessy. It was a great opportunity for ORI and uShaka Sea World to showcase our facilities and research – we look forward to future collaboration!
