On Saturday the 11th May, SAAMBR hosted WESSA’s Green Flag Awards Ceremony.
This awards ceremony recognises KZN schools who have participated in the International Eco-Schools programme. Schools who participate in the Eco-Schools programme encourage their students to be mindful of the environment and incorporate environmental learning into their lessons in an engaging, fun, action-orientated and socially responsible way.
From the selection available, schools are able to choose their own projects. One of the projects which will be available in 2020 focuses on the marine and coast and another on climate change. SAAMBR staff took the opportunity to encourage educators to consider a marine theme for their 2020 school projects.
WESSA International Programmes Manager, Cindy-Lee Cloete highlighted two additional WESSA run programmes involving schools – the Young Reporters for the Environment and Learning about Forests (LEAF) programmes.
Nomfundo Ndlovu, the KZN Eco-Schools co-ordinator presented a special award to Shea O Connor Combined School who has now banned the use of single use plastic on the school premises.
Before heading off home, SAAMBR marine educators took the participants on a guided tour of the aquarium and reiterated the importance of adopting a marine theme during 2020.
