70 years of helping people to care for our ocean

ORI hosted a course on methods for determining information on seabed habitats.

Professor Sean Fennessy

Professor Andy Green of UKZN recently ran a course at ORI on methods for determining information on seabed habitats. Participants in the course picture here are from Kenya, Tanzania and Madagascar, and are examining nautical charts in our region.

The course was part of the capacity building component of the WIO-Benth project, which ORI is leading. The project is compiling and analysing existing information on seabed habitats and faunal communities in the

Western Indian Ocean (WIO) from Kenya to off the east coast of South Africa, as well as off the west coast of Madagascar. Knowledge of habitats and communities can assist in identifying biodiversity hotspots and sensitive areas, which will help decision makers with Marine Spatial Planning in the region.
