Calling All Young Ocean Ambassadors!

SAAMBR launches FREE Marine Careers Program for 75 High School Learners in 2026

Do you love the ocean? Dream of becoming a marine biologist, diver, environmental educator, researcher, aquarist, or conservation change-maker?
Then this is your moment!

As part of its 75th anniversary celebrations, the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR) is proud to launch the ‘75 Young Ocean Ambassadors Program’ and applications are now open for the first FREE 3-day Marine Careers Course.

What’s happening?

SAAMBR will host 3 fully sponsored Marine Careers courses in 2026, starting with the first intake between 30 March – 1 April 2026 at uShaka Sea World.

This exciting programme is designed for Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners who are passionate about the ocean and curious about careers in marine science, conservation and education.

What will you experience?

As a Young Ocean Ambassador, you will:
  • Explore real-world marine and conservation careers
  • Meet and learn from scientists, veterinarians, aquarists, animal care specialists and educators
  • Take part in hands-on activities and inspiring discussions
  • Be involved throughout the year in clean-ups, community projects, and conservation events
  • Share your own ocean journey and help inspire others to care for our seas
How to apply

Because this is a fully funded programme, learners are asked to apply online and tell us why YOU should be one of SAAMBR’s 75 Young Ocean Ambassadors for 2026.

Applications close on the 28th February 2026. Successful applicants will be notified by 14 March 2026.

Applicants must be willing to participate in activities throughout the year, able to arrange their own transport to uShaka Sea World for the 3 days and as lunch is not provided, they would need to bring a packed lunch.

The Marine Careers Course is fully booked for this year.

uShaka Sea World Education runs two programmes for learners in Grades 8 and 9 to expose them to a range of potential marine careers and the formal qualifications that are required.

Marine Careers Workshop

The Marine Careers workshop is a 3-hour programme held on a Saturday morning. This programme includes a talk on the formal qualifications required in the marine field as well as a back-of-house walkabout focused on highlighting some of the marine professions mentioned during the talk. Space is limited to 60 learners per programme.
