Len Baumann's contribution to SAAMBR honoured in naming ceremony

Len Baumann and SAAMBR President Barry Rebeck

Any South African who knows their biscuits knows Baumann’s, a 40-year-old family run business headed by Len Baumann.

What they may not know is the vital contribution Len has made to the funding and success of the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR).

In recognition of his immense contribution as one of SAAMBR’s stalwarts, the organisation’s conference hall has been officially named the Len Baumann conference hall.

In October 1982 Len was elected to the SAAMBR council, and became a director. Since then he has demonstrated his acute financial and business acumen by playing a pivotal oversight and strategic support role.

Len’s philanthropic spirit and the magnitude of his contribution to SAAMBR’s Oceanographic Research Institute infrastructure over the years is surpassed only by his sense of modesty.

In 1993 Len became one of the founders of the Sea World Foundation for Research, Education and Development, a public benefit organisation created to support SAAMBR’s activities.

Len remains the foundation chairman, and has been instrumental in seeing the association through years of financially turbulent times. Under his astute guidance, the foundation has grown into a much-needed buffer against financial tribulations.

SAAMBR has been incredibly fortunate to have benefited from the guidance and support of someone of the calibre of Len Baumann.
